Millions of tons of ash from a volcano in Iceland that have grounded planes across Europe is traveling towards North America, government officials report.
The latest satellite projections from the U.K.'s Met Office, which monitors volcanic eruptions as part of a global network of Ash Advisory Centers, show the ash cloud already reaching as far as Newfoundland, explained Bob Syvret, a forecaster for the agency.
"The latest graphics that we've issued suggest that the tail end of the plume might just get into the far east of the Newfoundland area," he told FoxNews.com.But breathe easier, travellers: "It doesn't look a risk for North America" at this point, said Syvret, adding that the cloud would "probably stop around the Newfoundland area, and then move north into Greenland."
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed the report from the Met Office, noting that the Met's projections "do show an extension westward across the North Atlantic."

Thousands refuse to go home after Mexican quake

GUADALUPE VICTORIA, Mexico – Thousands of people camped in cars, soccer fields and vacant lots Tuesday as aftershocks from Easter Sunday's big earthquake kept them on edge.
About 25,000 people have been displaced by the magnitude-7.2 quake, most voluntarily, said Alfredo Escobedo, the civil protection chief for Baja California state. They are mainly in farming villages southwest of the city of Mexicali, near the epicenter.
"Right now, people are sleeping outside because they're afraid," Escobedo said. "They go to work at day and go home, but they don't want to spend the night inside."He estimated 200 to 300 homes were destroyed in the quake that shook both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, but authorities did not have a precise count. Many of those homes filled with mud and water that seeped up from the ground, he said.

Two seismic events -- one natural, the other manmade -- occurred not far from a West Virginia coal mine just days before a suspected methane explosion left 25 miners dead and four missing.
An earthquake registering magnitude 3.4 occurred early Sunday morning about 100 miles northeast of Montcoal, W. Va., the location of the Upper Big Branch Mine, a massive coal mining operation where an explosion killed and trapped miners more than a mile below the surface on Monday.
An earthquake of that magnitude is strong enough to dislodge pockets of methane gas, though the distance from the mine suggests that it would not have affected the explosion, Julie Dutton, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, told FoxNews.com.
"There's the definite possibility that that's what could have happened, but not from this earthquake," Dutton said. "This one was too far away and days separated. That makes a big difference."

ANCHORAGE, Alaska --Seismic activity indicates that a volcano near Anchorage could be waking up.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory says a series of small earthquakes began occurring early Monday near the summit of Mount Redoubt, about 100 miles southwest of Anchorage.
Scientists do not know if the earthquakes will result in the volcano becoming explosive, but they say there is a heightened possibility. Last year, the volcano was very active for months, at times producing huge ash plumes and sending mud flows down its flanks.
Rick Wessels, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, says the Mount Redoubt earthquakes are not connected to Sunday's 7.2-magnitude quake in Mexico just south of the U.S. border because the distances are too great.

When it comes to a devastating earthquake in California, the question isn't if, but when?
What magnitude would qualify as "big one," and what would the resulting disaster look like?
In light of the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Mexico's Baja California on Sunday and the continuing aftershocks, nervous residents are worrying over these questions and wondering about the seismic future of the Sunshine State.
In 1960 a 9.5 quake struck Chile, the most powerful ever recorded. In 1964, a 9.2 hit in Alaska. California isn't likely to register a quake of that magnitude, but "the big one" still could be destructive.
"We probably don't have faults large enough to generate an 8.0 except in the very northern part of the state, off Mendicino -- the Cascadia subduction zone," explains California state geologist Dr. John Parrish. That fault line runs from Northern California up to Vancouver, and it has probably generated big ones in the past."In fact, we think there was a greater-than-8 quake in 1700, which generated a sea wave called a tsunami when it hit Japan," he said. Still, anything larger than a 5 has the power to cause structural damage, he explained.
It's not clear what would happen if a truly massive quake hit California -- on the magnitude of, say, a terrifying 9.2. No scientific data exists, and geologists and policy makers are almost superstitiously loathe to speculate.
But if predictions from the Great California Shakeout are any indication, even a lesser massive quake could be devastating....

No deaths had been reported. The government building was also damaged, he said.The local general hospital was evacuated, with patients transferred to other facilities, according to Garcia.He also said the news station had not been able to reach anyone in Guadalupe de Victoria, a town 16 miles northeast of the epicenter. A magnitude 3 earthquake struck the Santa Monica Bay this afternoon, a short time after a magnitude 7.2 temblor struck Mexicali.
[Updated, 5:36 p.m.: Caltech seismologists upgraded the Santa Monica quake to magnitude 4.1 and said it's connected to the Mexicali temblor.]
The bay quake occurred about six miles south of Malibu around 4:10 p.m. There were no reports of damage or injuries.
Since the Mexicali quake, there have been other temblors around California, including several in Northern California and one in Julian, a backcountry town in San Diego County. There have also been aftershocks of the Mexicali quake centered in Mexico.

There were no reports of major infrastructure damage in Los Angeles, but reports were still coming in from San Diego and Mexico. San Diego fire officials were responding to at least one report of a damaged building...

MEXICALI, Mexico – Aftershocks rattled the southwest Mexico-U.S. border on Monday morning in the aftermath of a major earthquake that killed two people, blacked out cities and forced the evacuation of hospitals and nursing homes.Sunday's 7.2-magnitude quake, centered just south of the U.S. border near Mexicali, was one of the strongest earthquakes to hit region in decades, shaking at least 20 million people.It had a shallow depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers). But the human toll was minimal in large part because the energy from the quake moved northwest of Mexicali toward a less populated area, said Jessica Sigala, a geophysicist from the U.S. Geological Survey."We were just kind of lucky that the energy went the other way," Sigala said. Up to thousands of "icequakes" may shake a glacier a day, rumblings that could shed light on how climate is changing.Just as volcanoes involve magma interacting with rock, so too do glaciers often involve interplays between water and ice. As such, giant events within glaciers can occur, with icequakes in Antarctica known to reach the force of a magnitude 7 earthquake.
To learn more about icequakes, scientists in Alaska used equipment and techniques normally employed for monitoring seismic events to investigate the Bering Glacier, which flows from the St. Elias mountain range to the south-central coast of Alaska. U.S. Ends Search for Last American Lost in Haiti Quake

Lonez Annoule's search for his 6-year-old daughter Lodz began minutes after the 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti. He was about to prepare to send the little girl, an American citizen, back home to Miami when catastrophe struck. Annoule was on his way back from his trip to sell used clothing in the southwestern city of Petit-GoÂve. His bus came to a halt because piles of dead bodies were blocking the road. "When I saw those bodies, I only thought of one thing - my daughter," says Annoule, 37. "I walked all night, nonstop, from 5:30 in the evening to 10 a.m., to reach her."Annoule covered about 35 miles in the darkness, with long spreads of silence and bursts of cries for help. As he approached his sister-in-law's house in the Port-au-Prince district of Carrefour Feuilles, each block no longer resembled what he remembered. And the four-story apartment building where he had left his daughter was flattened. "When I got to the house, I saw my sister-in law with her arms stretched out, and I knew," says Annoule, fixing his eyes on the ground.He hired neighborhood men to pull concrete blocks with their bare hands, looking for any sign of Lodz. They worked for two straight weeks. The search for the little girl was then turned over to the U.S. military's mortuary affairs, a unit that began looking for the remains of American victims of the quake in the beginning of March. The team has since recovered the remains of 52 Americans, but not Lodz's. This week, about 2½ months after the quake, it gave up....
