Seismologists forecast severe earthquakes

Australia boosts tsunami detection in Coral Sea

SYDNEY-Australia said on Tuesday it had installed a deep ocean tsunami buoy in the Coral Sea off its northeastern coast, boosting tsunami detection in a region which has seen two tsunamis kill more than 2,000 people since 1998."The new buoy was deployed in the Coral Sea last week and is now operational," Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett said in a statement."It is monitoring changes in sea levels for signs of potential threat from the South Solomon and New Hebrides trenches to the east coast of Australia," Garrett said.In April 2007, the Solomon Islands were hit by a tsunami that killed at least 34 people and destroyed up to 2,500 homes. In July 1998, two undersea quakes of magnitude 7.0 created three tsunamis that killed at least 2,100 people near the town of Aitape on Papua New Guinea's north coast.Following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which killed 230,000 people, Asian nations installed a series of satellite-linked tsunami detection buoys in the Indian Ocean.Papua New Guinea and the neighbouring Solomon Islands lie on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common. Both are developing nations which rely heavily on Australian aid.Australia's two Deep ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART) buoys are part of the A$68.9 million ($63 million) Australian Tsunami Warning System progressively being installed around the island continent. The Coral Sea buoy is the second installed. The first was positioned off Australia's southern island state of Tasmania. The buoys consist of a bottom pressure sensor anchored to the sea floor and a surface buoy. An acoustic link transmits data from the bottom sensor to the surface buoy and then satellite links relay the data to warning centres for analysis."The massive devastation caused by the Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004 is a stark reminder of the potential for destruction that can be caused by the sudden movement of the sea floor," said Garrett."The sooner that people can be alerted to the chance of a tsunami the greater the likelihood that they can take action and survive," he said. Quake shakes Iran region,no reports of casualties

TEHRAN-An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 shook a southwest region of Iran on Wednesday but there were no immediate reports of any casualties, the official IRNA news agency reported. The quake struck in an area round the city of Dogonbadan, about 600 km (375 miles) south of the Iranian capital Tehran, IRNA quoted Iran's Geophysics Institute as saying. Dogonbadan is situated near some big Iranian oil fields but there was no mention in the IRNA report of any damage to oil facilities.Iran, the world's fourth largest oil producer, is frequently struck by earthquakes because the country is criss-crossed by faultines. http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSBLA624285

S'pore invests $700 mln to research cancer, disasters

SINGAPORE-Singapore said on Friday it will invest more than S$1 billion ($724 million) into research to improve innovation in the city-state, including a cancer centre and an institute to research natural disasters such as tsunamis. Singapore, which is shifting its economy away from manufacturing to more services industries, will spend S$350 million to encourage "academic entrepreneurship" in Singapore's universities, S$256 million on a cancer research centre and S$287 million on an "Earth Observatory"."To develop a dynamic economy with a vibrant entrepreneurial sector, we need to make innovation a pervasive culture," said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in a statement. The Earth Observatory of Singapore, which will receive funding over 10 years, will focus its research on natural disasters such as tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and climate change.Initial research programmes include refining tsunami forecasts for western Sumatra and analysing the impact of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions on the Southeast Asia region.[[[[Indonesia, a Southeast Asian country, suffers from frequent earthquakes as it lies in the so called "Pacific Ring of Fire", an area of instance seismic activity.A huge earthquake off Sumatra caused a massive tsunami in December 2004 killing 230,000 people around the region.]]]]The cancer research centre, which will receive funding over seven years, will focus on cancers prevalent in Asian populations such as leukaemia, colorectal and breast cancers.

Officials Make Plans As Kilauea Spews Ash, Gasses

HAWAII VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii - Kilauea Volcano is putting on quite a show, but health and Civil Defense officials are concerned about the ash and gasses spewing from Halema`uma`u Crater. Park rangers and officials on Wednesday allowed into a restricted area to see the spectacular eruption. The volcano is spewing a huge plume of gasses and ash. The spectacular and potentially dangerous setting was the backdrop for a news conference.Park rangers, scientists, and public officials gave a briefing on the rim of Halema`uma`u Crater, overlooking the column of ash and smoke. The area is closed to the public. The south and west sections of Crater Rim Road are also closed because of high levels of sulfur dioxide."The 10-fold increase of sulfur dioxide at the summit makes the total output of SO2 double and the increased hazard is that the emission source is much closer to where people breathe and visit," geochemist Jeff Sutton said.So far, trade winds have blown the gasses and ash to the southwest, triggering air quality alerts in the town of Pahala."We know we're dealing with a situation that's exciting and so while scientists say it's exciting, to me it's work," Hawaii Count Mayor Harry Kim said.Officials are monitoring the emissions and making plans in case the wind shifts and the eruption increases.Officials say they do not expect a major eruption. However, they said, while unlikely, it is possible they would have to close the park and evacuate some residents."The volcano is actually in a relaxed state so it doesn't seem like anything is going to happen. It should be passive unless we see inflation or earthquakes occurring," Hawaii Volcano Observatory scientist Jim Kauahikaua said. The top of the ash plume from Halema'uma'u Crater is reaching up to a mile above ground level. Officials notified Hawaii aviation agencies of the potential danger to aircraft. The tower of ash jetted hundreds of feet above the crater has attracted the attention of many tourists and Big Island residents who try to get a glimpse of the event.Despite the health hazard visitors are flocking to the crater for the rare opportunity to witness Pele's power up close.Officials estimated that thousands of visitors are arriving daily to view the eruption. Park officials are trying to allow spectators as close to the action as possible while trying to keep people safe. From Highway 11 outside of Hilo, Pele's lure is drawing visitors to an overlook where you can view Halema`uma`u from afar, but still taste the eruption."The sulfur I can feel it in my lungs," South Carolina visitor Jeremy Aartun said. They come from all over the world, Sweden, French Polynesia and all parts of the mainland."We had planned our trip to see this. Then last week, we saw there was an explosion. We kind of worried they would shut down the whole park-glad to be able to get this far," Aartun said.Scientists measured the sulfur dioxide emission rates recently from the volcano from between 600 tons up to 2,500 tons a day.Mike Freed lives in Pahala, where he has been covered in ash and has to wear a breathing mask."I came up to see it, get a good look. It said in the paper 4,500 tons of S02 a day. I've been breathing that, but it is something amazing," Freed said. The beauty coming from below amazes those who visit the crater's rim."It's like watching the earth form, the beginning of time. Incredible," South Carolina visitor Valerie Aartun said.

Kilauea Eruption Poses Potential Danger, Plenty of Excitement for Flocking Visitors

VOLCANO,Hawaii-Visitors are flocking to witness the spectacular eruption at Hawaii's Kilauea volcano despite summit explosions, toxic fumes and partial closures at the national park.Nearly 9,000 people a day are touring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on average so far this year, a 2.5 percent increase over last year when the volcano's 25-year eruption was much more peaceful, said Cindy Orlando, the park's superintendent."Everybody's coming.I think they recognize they have an opportunity to participate and be here at a very historic time," Orlando said. "They're witnessing the creation of earth, and you can't experience that anywhere else in the world."Inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, viewers can see the plume of ash and sulfur dioxide rising from Halemaumau Crater, which spewed small blobs of lava that fell along its rim this week and exploded gas and gravel-sized rocks on the summit last week-the first such burst from Kilauea's main crater since 1924.Outside the park along the southeast edge of the Big Island, as many as 10,000 visitors in one day have come to see fresh lava collide with the ocean, creating a giant cloud of steam, according to county and park officials. A new lookout point allows viewers to get about 600 feet from the lava flow.Emergency officials are preparing to evacuate the area if the winds change, moving the fumes' course inland toward areas with a scattered population approaching 10,000. So far, Hawaii's famous tradewinds are pushing the plume to the southwest. The highly concentrated levels of sulfur dioxide could pose serious health risks, especially to people with existing respiratory problems. State health officials say the gas has not posed serious problems so far because it is blowing more toward the ocean."It's unpredictable. The last several months have been extremely unusual, and perhaps the most exciting activity on Kilauea in decades," said Tim Orr, a geologist at Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Most of the national park remains open, including the visitor center, Volcano House Hotel, Kilauea Military Camp, Volcano Art Center Gallery, Thurston Lava Tube, Devastation Trail, Chain of Craters Road, Petroglyph Trail and all backcountry campsites.Closed areas include all trails leading to Halemaumau Crater and part of Crater Rim Drive near the ash-laden toxic gas plume. The volcano has not given rangers reason to believe it's about to blow because there's no visible lava in the crater itself, little seismic activity and no surface swell, Orlando said."As long as the winds stay as they are, there is no danger," she said. "The park is Hawaii's gift to the world, so we want to keep the area open as long as we can."About 536,000 people visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in January and February, the most recent months for which data has been compiled, she said.Park ranger Arnold Nakata said he's trying to allow as many people as possible to view the volcano's recent activity while ensuring their safety."This kind of activity is inevitable," Nakata said of the changing lava flows. "It's minute-to-minute. At any given time, this could stop and change."

BEIJING-A major earthquake and two aftershocks hit China's northwestern region of Xinjiang on Friday morning, the China Earthquake Administration said, but there were no initial reports of casualties or damage.China Earthquake Administration said the initial quake, of 7.3 magnitude, happened at 6:33 p.m. EDT on Thursday, or 6:33 am local time. The epicenter was located near Yutian County, or about 230 km (140 miles) southeast of the city of Hotan. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at 7.2 magnitude, at a depth of 22.9 km (14.2 miles).China said the initial quake was followed by a magnitude 5.1 aftershock at 6:38 p.m. EDT and one of magnitude 5.2 about 30 minutes later, both roughly in the same location. The USGS put the aftershocks at 5.3 and 5.5 magnitude.China measures earthquakes using the Richter scale. Initial Chinese news reports carried no details about casualties or damage.Xinjiang is a relatively sparsely populated, predominately Muslim, region. Yutian County has a population of 2.3 million, most of them Uighur farmers.China is hit by several earthquakes a year, most hitting sparsely populated rural areas and causing no casualties.

Royals see volcanic devastation

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have come face to face with the devastating sight of a modern day Pompeii during the latest leg of their royal tour of the Caribbean. It is Prince Charles's first visit to Montserrat since a major eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano devastated the island in 1997.The royal couple were welcomed to the island at Little Bay, the proposed new capital. The Royal Montserrat Defence Force provided the Guard of Honour and the national anthem was played by a band of school children on the steel pans. The historic Georgian capital Plymouth was destroyed in the eruption and people living in the area were evacuated to the other side of the Montserrat.Half of the island is still uninhabitable with an exclusion zone put in place to protect the public. But the people here are slowly redeveloping what's left.Charles and Camilla were shown around plans for Little Bay Development that it is hoped will bring back not only visitors to the island but also the thousands of Montserratians who left. The population fell from over 12,000 before the eruptions to about 5,000 now.The volcano has been "quiet" over the past year and it is constantly being monitored by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. The royal couple were shown around the facility and got a good look at the steam venting from the dome of Soufriere Hills.
Steaming volcano
Despite most of the south being out of bounds to most people, Charles and Camilla were given an opportunity to see the devastation for themselves. They were allowed to go inside the unsafe area. From a vantage point on St George's Hill they viewed the steaming volcano and the ashen remains of Plymouth.Houses, churches, and cars were all visible - partially buried by mud and ash in what looked like a modern day Pompeii. But as well as seeing the devastation, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall also saw the redevelopment efforts happening in Montserrat. They visited a new market and a cultural centre that have been recently built on the island. From Montserrat they will continue their journey aboard the Leander to Jamaica, a trip which will take three days.Once in Jamaica they will attend a number of cultural events, including a tour the Bob Marley Museum.
