MAG 6.6 quake hits Tohoku, Kanto, tsunami warning issued

TOKYO-An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 hit the Tohoku and Kanto regions Saturday morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, issuing a tsunami warning to coastal areas in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.Several tsunamis up to 20 centimeters high were observed in Ishinomaki, Sendai, both in Miyagi, and Soma in Fukushima, before the agency called off the warning at 1:20 p.m.The 11:39 a.m. quake registered 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in several parts of Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima and Tochigi prefectures.The tremor was also observed in wide areas of Japan from Hokkaido to Shiga Prefecture, according to the agency.The epicenter of the quake was about 120 kilometers under the seabed off Fukushima Prefecture, the agency said.The government set up a liaison office at the crisis management center at the prime minister's office.At swimming beaches in the quake-hit areas, sea-goers and surfers temporarily sought shelter at breakwaters.
